Border Chemcial Conducts Winter Test of Biodiesel

Manitoba Hydro Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle
In October 2006, Manitoba Hydro announced they were undertaking a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) research and demonstration project.  The utility worked with CS Energy (California) to convert a 2005 Toyota Prius to a PHEV by adding an advanced battery pack system which can be recharged using a standard 120-volt plug-in.  It is anticipated the test vehicle will be able to run on electric power alone for up to 50 kilometers, after which it will operate as a conventional hybrid-electric vehicle.  To learn more...
 
Hydrogen Hybrid Fuel Cell Bus Demonstration

The Province of Manitoba recently announced its most recent hydrogen demonstration project - a hydrogen hybrid fuel cell bus demonstration.  The bus, which was tested and showcased throughout Winnipeg in September 2006, is classified as a zero-combustion vehicle which produces no emissions, only water vapour.

Biodiesel Tax Advantage

To further stimulate the development of biodiesel in Manitoba, the Provincial government announced that it has eliminated all provincial taxes on Manitoba-produced pure biodiesel in the 2006 budget.

Province of Manitoba Launches Ethanol Fuel Station

 

The Province of Manitoba unveiled its new special filling station with environmentally friendly fuel known as E85, which has an ethanol content of up to 85 percent. Provincial and Federal government fleets in the Winnipeg area will be using this lower-emission fuel and it is expected that this project will eventually lead to providing E85 to the thousands of flex fuel vehicles already registered in Manitoba.

The City of Winnipeg announces Diesel-Electric Hybrid Buses

The City of Winnipeg released its preliminary 2006 Capital Budget and 2007 to 2011 Five Year Forecast, which includes the dedication of $142 million for the transit system, of which $50 million is for transit enhancements and $27 million is for new diesel-electric hybrid buses.

Province of Manitoba's 10-Point Action Plan

The Province of Manitoba announced a 10-point action plan to promote the development of biodiesel in Manitoba. Included in this action plan is the Province and Natural Resources Canada will work together to provide a $1.5-million request for proposals (RFP) support package to Manitoba biodiesel producers who wish to either increase the production of biodiesel or to start a new venture.

Manitoba Hydro Purchases Biodiesel

Manitoba Hydro is currently using canola based biodiesel at a blend of B20 at two of its sites, which includes about 60 vehicles. Bifrost Bio Blends located in Arborg Manitoba, the first plant in Manitoba to produce biodiesel fuel, is supplying the biodiesel to Manitoba Hydro. The plant uses a variety of off-grade oil seed crops to produce the fuel, which is produced to ASTM 6751 standards.

University of Manitoba Biofuels Endowment Fund

The University of Manitoba received a $1 million research endowment fund from Husky Energy Inc. The endowment fund will go towards the creation of two research chairs in biofuels with a focus on ethanol.

City of Winnipeg Hybrid Evaluation

As part of a hybrid evaluation program, Winnipeg Fleet Management Agency (WFMA), the agency responsible for managing the majority of the City of Winnipeg’s vehicles, provided City of Winnipeg Mail Couriers with two Toyota Prius hybrid cars. Over the period of a year, WFMA monitored the vehicle performance and fuel efficiency.   The vehicle performed well year round and the vehicles proved to be the most fuel efficient vehicle in the fleet. 

WFMA is now evaluating two hybrid Toyota Highlander SUV’s that are being operated by the Winnipeg Fire & Paramedics Service.  The vehicle performance and fuel efficiency of the hybrids will be evaluated for a years time, with the completion of the evaluation scheduled for the Summer of 2006.  

 
Hydrogen Hybrid Internal Combustion Engine (HHICE) Bus Demonstration

 

In the winter of 2005, the Province of Manitoba along with a number of local and international project partners, conducted a cold-weather hydrogen engine powered bus demonstration, the first on-road test of its kind in Canada. Manitoba’s winter climate made it an ideal location to test the durability of the HHICE technology and over a three-month period the bus traveled approximately 300 miles and carried roughly 1,000 passengers.

Manitoba Biodiesel Advisory Council Report

The RRVCCC had the opportunity to participate in the Manitoba Biodiesel Advisory Council. The council was created to review the biodiesel production industry and its potential development in

Manitoba. As a council member, the RRVCCC attended monthly meetings, which included a number of industry and stakeholder consultations in order to provide their expertise and feedback to province. 

The council produced a final report of its findings to the Province of Manitoba.  In general, the report examines the technical, social, environmental and economic considerations associated with the development of a biodiesel industry in Manitoba.

Manitoba mandates the use of E10, a blend of 10% ethanol and 90%    gasoline, by 2005. 
Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Bus
An $8 million "made in Manitoba" New Flyer bus with Canadian made fuel stacks and compressed hydrogen storage tanks will be demonstrated in Winnipeg in 2005. 
 
Solar-Powered Car
The Red River Raycer, a solar-powered vehicle that will be able to travel up to 100 kilometers an hour without using a single drop of gasoline, was designed and built by students at Red River College for the North American Solar Challenge.
